Project on fruit farming in Karnali Province

Jumla / Aug 25: Three local levels of Jumla district are launching fruit farming by developing dedicated gardens.

Under the Ministry of Land Management and Cooperatives at Karnali Province, the fruit development directorate, Surkhet has decided to establish orchards in Jumla local levels.

Province project manager Chitra Bahadur Rokaya informed that the fruit farming with the establishment of orchards would be run in Himali, Sinja and Kanakasundari Rural Municipalities of Jumla.

Other places to have similar project are Banphikot, Musikot and Sanibheri of Rukum Paschim, Siddhakumakha and Sharada of Salyan, Chhedagad and Junichande of Jajarkot, Narayan, Athbisk and Chamundabindrasaini of Dailekh.

Kalikot, Mugu, Humla and Dolpa will also have the programme. Considering the climate and geographical specificity, the fruits to be cultivated are apple, walnut, orange and kiwifruit among others.

Individual farmers, their groups, cooperatives and agricultural entrepreneurs would be provided 50 percent grants to encourage them in fruit farming. The project is aimed at expanding and commercializing fruit farming in the hilly and mountainous region. It would further increase farmers’ income and boost local productions. RSS
