Remittances Surpass Nepal’s Budget Size as Rs 2.36 trillion Enters Country in One Year

Kathmandu / Aug. 26, 2026: Remittance inflows into Nepal have surpassed the size of the country’s annual budget, with a total of Rs 2.363 trillion (Rs 23.63 kharba) entering the country during the last fiscal year.

The figures are based on the Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation Report for fiscal year 2025/26 (FY 2082/83 BS), released by Nepal Rastra Bank on Wednesday.

According to the report, Nepal received Rs 2.363 trillion and Rs 13 billion in remittances during the review year, representing a 37.1 percent increase compared to the previous fiscal year. Remittance inflows had increased by 19.2 percent in the previous year.

In June 2026 alone, Nepal received Rs 242.33 billion in remittances, compared to Rs 189.11 billion during the same month a year earlier.

Nepal had implemented a total budget of approximately Rs 1.964 trillion in the last fiscal year. The latest figures therefore show that remittances sent by Nepalis working abroad exceeded the size of the government’s annual budget.

In US dollar terms, remittance inflows increased by 28.1 percent to US$16.19 billion, compared to a 16.3 percent increase in the previous fiscal year.

The report also shows that net secondary income rose to Rs 2.581 trillion during the review year, up from Rs 1.874 trillion in the previous fiscal year.

Meanwhile, the number of Nepalis obtaining institutional and individual labour approvals for foreign employment stood at 406,519 during the year. The number of workers obtaining renewed labour approvals reached 385,783.

In the previous fiscal year, 505,957 Nepalis had obtained new labour approvals, while 333,309 had received renewed labour approvals.

The latest figures underscore the growing importance of foreign employment and remittances to Nepal’s economy, with remittance earnings now exceeding the size of the government’s annual budget.
