SC refuses to halt Nepali Congress’ 15th General Convention

Kathmandu / Aug 27: The Supreme Court has refused to issue an interim order on a supplementary petition filed by former Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba and former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka, seeking to halt the party’s 15th General Convention.

The ruling clears the legal path for Gagan Thapa to proceed with preparations for the Nepali Congress’ 15th General Convention.

A full bench comprising Justices Dr. Nahakul Subedi, Mahesh Sharma Paudel and Meghraj Pokharel, on Thursday ruled that there was no prima facie basis requiring an interim order as sought by the petitioners.

The court noted that on April 17, 2026, a joint bench had dismissed an earlier writ petition, finding no need to overturn the Election Commission’s decision. The full bench clarified that the earlier ruling had neither directed nor instructed the petitioners or respondents to implement any particular action or decision.

The bench concluded that there was no immediate legal basis for issuing an interim order and directed that the matter be dealt with according to law.
