Nepal Post Office Receives APPU Innovation Award for Services in Remote Areas

Kathmandu / Sept. 7: Nepal Post has received the 2026 Innovation Award from the Asia-Pacific Postal Union (APPU) in recognition of its efforts to provide postal and government courier services in remote and geographically challenging areas of Nepal.

The award was presented to the Department of Postal Services during the 14th APPU Congress, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from August 31 to September 4, 2026, according to Director General Manmaya Bhattarai Pangeni. Nepal Post was recognized under the category “Service in Remote Areas” for its efforts to expand government courier services to remote communities.

The award comes as the government seeks to transform the postal service from a traditional mail-delivery system into a government courier service under its 100-point agenda for governance reform. Nepal Post has increasingly been delivering important government documents—including passports, driving licences, educational certificates and health reports—to citizens’ homes.

A three-member Nepali delegation led by Director General Pangeni participated in the 14th APPU Congress. The delegation shared Nepal’s experiences and perspectives on postal modernization, reforms undertaken to date and the government’s priorities for the future of the postal system.

Pangeni said Nepal’s difficult geography poses significant challenges to operating postal services, particularly in remote areas where road and telecommunications infrastructure remain limited. She said the government is working to improve infrastructure and strengthen postal services to ensure reliable access even in hard-to-reach communities.

She said the role of Nepal Post is being expanded with the objective of bringing government services closer to citizens and making them simpler, faster and more reliable.

Nepal also highlighted the potential of the postal network to support cross-border e-commerce and regional postal delivery networks. The Nepali delegation emphasized that the postal system could become an effective channel for connecting local and indigenous products with international markets.

According to Pangeni, Nepal particularly stressed the need to connect products produced by small entrepreneurs, farmers and rural communities with wider markets. Cooperation among APPU member countries, she said, could help establish regional e-commerce and postal delivery routes capable of connecting small Nepali producers to markets across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Nepal was also given special time during a plenary session of the Congress, where Pangeni briefed participants on the damage caused by the devastating floods in Nepal. She noted that the importance of postal and communication networks becomes even greater during disasters, when roads, bridges and telecommunications services are disrupted.

She said the extensive reach of the postal network could help deliver information, relief materials, medicines and essential government services to affected communities during emergencies.

At the Congress, Nepal also called for greater international cooperation to develop a modern, reliable, inclusive and citizen-centred postal system. It sought support for technology transfer, staff capacity development, digital systems, e-commerce, environmentally friendly technologies and disaster-resilient postal infrastructure.

Representatives from 32 member countries of the Asia-Pacific region participated in the 14th APPU Congress. Discussions focused on postal service modernization, digital transformation, cross-border trade, postal logistics and strengthening cooperation among member countries.
