Medical Education Seats Increased by 418: How Many Seats Were Allocated to Each Institution?

Kathmandu / Oct. 16: The government has increased the number of seats by 418 across various medical education programmes, including MBBS, BSc Nursing and BMS, compared with the previous academic year.
A meeting of the Medical Education Commission (MEC), chaired by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, decided to allocate a total of 9,691 seats across 84 educational institutions for the academic year 2026/27, according to commission sources.
The sources said that 110 seats have been added to the MBBS programme alone this year.
The commission has prioritised expanding the capacity of government-run educational institutions while keeping the number of seats at private medical colleges unchanged. The decision to increase seats was based on available infrastructure, human resources and monitoring reports from government institutions, a commission source said.
According to the commission, 90 educational institutions submitted self-assessment forms and applications for seat allocation this year. The relevant authorities monitored the institutions’ requests, and seats were allocated to 84 institutions based on the resulting reports.
The commission does not approve seat requests solely on the basis of applications submitted by educational institutions. Instead, it determines the number of seats after assessing physical infrastructure, teaching staff, human resources and compliance with other required standards, the source said.
MBBS Seats Increased by 110
The commission has added 110 seats to the MBBS programme this year. Shaheed Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences in Geta, Kailali, has been allocated 50 seats for MBBS studies for the first time.
The decision paves the way for the university to offer the undergraduate MBBS programme.
Similarly, the number of MBBS seats has been increased at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan and the Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences, operated by the Nepal Army. Both institutions have received an additional 30 seats each compared with the previous academic year, according to commission sources.
The 50 seats allocated to Shaheed Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences, combined with the 30 additional seats each for the two other institutions, account for the total increase of 110 MBBS seats.
BSc Nursing and BMS Seats Also Increased
The commission has increased the number of seats in the BSc Nursing programme by 210 compared with the previous academic year. Similarly, 98 additional seats have been allocated to the BMS programme.
The commission determined the seat allocations for this academic year based on demand for different academic programmes, the capacity of educational institutions and monitoring reports.
The seat expansion primarily focuses on MBBS, BSc Nursing and BMS programmes, while the number of seats at private medical colleges has remained unchanged, a commission source said.
