Sushila KarkiKathmandu / July 10: The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee under the Legislature Parliament has finally unanimously endorsed the Judicial Council’s recommendation for the appointment of then the Supreme Court’s senior most Justice Sushila Karki to the post of Chief Justice. Karki has been heading the SC as the Acting CJ.

Committee President Kul Bahadur Gurung read out the hearing of the Committee on Sunday. On the occasion, Acting CJ Karki vowed to keep the judiciary free from corruption and make it activities fair. Cases concerning poor and backward people, women and environment have been given priority, she said.

Acting CJ Karki further said the workload of judiciary would be reduced if appointments of 11 nominated judges were made on time, she said. She pledged to take zero-tolerance against corruption.

Making the entire judiciary fast and prompt, the meaningful enforcement of the constitution would be the focus of judiciary, she stressed. Judiciary is never expected to breach the constitutional boundary.

Quick hearing of the cases in pending and effective implementations of the hearings will be the priority of her term as the next CJ.

It may be noted that questions were raised over the recommendation of Sapana Shrestha (who was an already lawmaker from the proportional quota). This issue was raised in the Committee too. In response, Acting CJ Karki said candidate’s competency was considered while nominating her to the post of CJ judge and she herself recommended her name.

Political belief should never influence the court business, she said. It must be kept outside by the court people while entering to duties. The court is still not inclusive in case of the participation of women, she said sharing her revolt experiences of being neglected on duty just for being a woman. “I was not given a desk for many times, but I tolerated all these with a patience,” she said.

The committee members demanded free, prompt and independent judiciary. RSS
