Will leads a dalit man to become a preacher

Jhapa / September 24: The discrimination on the basis of caste system is still in practice in Nepal but Purna BK 55, of Eastern Jhapa district overcame the issue with his tact.

Although there is no difference due to caste in Hindu religion, people are creating barrier on the basis of caste. People from ‘so called’ lower caste are not allowed to perform religious preaching as they were called as impure but BK attained his religious degree and working as preacher in his society.

Despite his achievement, his journey was not smooth as he had to hide his caste while learning Sanskrit in Kathmandu. BK started learning Sanskrit while he was working as a labor in Kathmandu during 1980s. He recalls that he could not tell his caste to his peers and teachers as he believed that telling the caste could invite catastrophe in his life and he could not be able to complete his study.

People at his community surprised after they saw him citing various rhymes of Sanskirt. It was simply not believable to many of them but he had knowledge of different Hindu scriptures. He started preaching at his community as he had good knowledge of it. He is supporting people of his place to perform different prayers. “People of ‘so called’ upper caste still hesitate to come to me for doing prayers but people from my community feel comfortable for inviting me,” he shares. He has been managing bread and butter for nine members of his community from the same profession. “I have studied many Hindu literatures but none of them discriminated on the basis of religion, so, I realized that it is the people and society, which created obstacle for us,” he adds.

This could be a good lesson for so called religious leaders of Hindu religion that no-one can be deprived from religion and make discrimination based on any religion.
