Majhi, Tsering, Sherpa qualify for Faldo Series Asia Final

Golf pictureKathmandu / September 24: Shivaraj Majhi, Tenzing Tsering and Pratima Sherpa on Wednesday qualified for the Faldo Series Asia Final to be held at the Mission Hill Golf Course in China in March next year.

Majhi won the boys’ 17-21 age-group event, Tsering topped the boys’ 12-16 age-group competition and Sherpa triumphed in the girls’ tournament during the Faldo Series Nepal Championship qualifying tournament here at the par-72 Gokarna Golf Course on Wednesday.

Majhi recorded a three-stroke win over Arun Tamang with a total three-round card of seven-over 223. Majhi carded four-over 76 in the third round while his nearest competitor Tamang also shot an identical four-over 76 for a total score of 10-over 226.

Both Majhi and Tamang played a horrible first nine holes, shooting five-over 41 allowing Prithvi Malla to join in the race to finish top in the age-group category. But while both Majhi and Tamang improved in the back nine, Malla caved in. Starting the day seven strokes behind Majhi, Malla levelled the scores in the first nine holes by carding two-under 34. But in the back nine, both Majhi and Tamang shot one-under 35 while Malla dropped four shots. Malla had bogeys on the 14h and 16th and a double bogey on the par-5 15th to finish third at 11-over 227.

Tsering played a miserable round of 15-over 87 but still it was enough for him to cement the top spot and a ticket to Mission Hills Golf Club as his nearest rival Aaryan Kumar finished three strokes adrift of him. Tsering completed the three round at 241 while Kumar, who carded 11-over 83 on Wednesday, scored 244 in total. Sherpa produced 17-over 89 in the third round on Wednesday to win the girls’ category with the total card of 268. Kashmira Shah finished in a distant second at 312.
