Kathmandu, October 4: Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh has said Nepal’s participation in the 70th UN General Assembly has been very fruitful.

In a news conference at Tribhuvan International Airport upon his arrival from New York after the UNGA participation, DPM Singh, said Nepal’s presence in the UNGA was fruitful as it gave a message to international community that Nepal became successful to promulgate new constitution through the Constituent Assembly.

Through the UNGA, the international community was called for good will and assistance to Nepal for its development after the promulgation of the inclusive and democratic constitution of Federal Democratic Republic Nepal, said the DPM.

“Stating that Nepal has moved ahead to development and prosperity following the new constitution, I’ve urged the foreign countries for their assistance,” he reiterated. While addressing the UNGA, DPM Singh had strongly raised the issue that the landlocked countries must enjoy the rights of trade and transit without any obstruction; and Nepal should be conferred the rights of managerial role in view of its contribution to establishment of peace.

The UNGA endorsed the post 2015 sustainable development agenda in the wake of the completion of the Millennium Development Goals. There are 17 goals and 169 targets including eradication of poverty and hunger, and others relating to education, livelihood and employment.

During the meeting, DPM Singh stressed for human centered development citing the inter relations between democracy and development. He briefed the participants of the promulgation of an inclusive and democratic constitution in Nepal and its salient features.

In the sidelines of the UNGA, Nepal and Jamaica signed an agreement paper for establishing diplomatic relations. DPM Singh said that Nepal had participated in the High Level Conference on South-South Cooperation organized by China and the United Nations, High Level Conference of the Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and interactions on exchanging energy among the countries and gender equity.

DPM Singh also held separate meetings with the Sri Lankan President, Bhutanese Prime Minister and the UN Secretary General. Nepal is also marking the 60th anniversary of membership of the UN. The UNGA is taken as incomparable opportunity as the participating world leaders express their countries’ political, social, cultural and economic standpoint.

DPM Singh left for New York on September 23 leading the Nepali delegation to the 70th session of the UNGA. Prime Minister Sushil Koirala was scheduled to participate in the meeting but he postponed his visit taking into consideration frail political situation of the country and DPM Singh participated in the meeting.
