CDO Kanel wins ‘Integrity Idol Award-2015’

The Accountability Lab Nepal awarded CDO Kanel with the prestigious Integrity Idol Award-2015 during a national award ceremony held in the capital on Sunday.

Winner Kanel had demonstrated his lead role in promoting good governance with innovation, commitment and integrity while working as a CDO of Solukhumbu and Panchthat districts.

Awarding the winner, Deputy-Prime Minister Chitra Bahadur KC, the chief guest of the event, said that the civil service employees serving for the best interest of the people rising above the personal interests are the solid base of the country development.

Receiving the award, CDO Kanel said that the smile on the lip of the service recipients is the indicator for assessing the effectiveness of the civil servant. He added “For an honest government officer, citizen’s smile after receiving the service from any government office is the biggest reward that he/she could ever receive.”

He won the award with 17,833 votes out of 46,992 votes from the general citizens, said Integrity Idol event coordinator Ashmita Sharma.

The event was attended by more than two hundred and fifty representatives of different civil society organizations, journalists, civil servants and general members of the public.

The winner has been announced after a month long voting campaign that included SMS voting, web based voting and rigorous deliberation by the members of a judging panel, informed Lab’s Chief Narayan Adhikari.

The panel included former chief, Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority Surya Nath Upadhyay, Former Minister of Science and Technology, Ganesh Shah, Chairperson of Transparency International Bharat Bahadur Thapa,

In 2014 District Education Officer of Panchthar District Gyan Mani Nepal was crowned the country’s first Integrity Idol. This is the second national campaign to recognize and celebrate Nepal’s most honest government officials.
