Shashank and Sitadevi elected NC general secretary and treasurer

ShasankKathmandu / March 8: Dr Shashank Koirala and Sita Devi Yadav have been elected to the posts of general secretary and treasurer of the Nepali Congress (NC) from its 13th general convention, respectively.

According to the result of Tuesday vote count of the party election held on March 6 at party central office Sanepa, Koirala secured 1,417 votes to become the general secretary of the party while his close contender Arjun Narsingh KC got 1,017 votes. Koirala outsmart KC by 400 vote margin.

Likewise, another general secretary hopeful Gagan Kumar Thapa gathered 584 votes. Koirala was the candidate from the Poudel panel whereas KC belonged to the Deuba group.

Dr Shashank, who was born in Biratnagar in 2015 BS (1959 AD) as the youngest son of NC founder leader BP Koirala, is the eye specialist by profession. Koirala joined politics in 2046 BS (1990 AD) through medical field. He was elected as a central committee member in the 12th general convention of NC. He is the elected people’s representative from Nawalparasi constituency no. 1 in Constituent Assembly (CA) polls in 2008 and 2013 AD.

Similarly, Sita Devi Yadav secured 1,217 to ascend to the post of treasurer of the party. Her closest rival Chitralekha Yadav obtained 1,209 votes. Sita Devi edged Chitra Lekha by narrow margin of eight votes, the Election Committee confirmed.

Treasurer candidate duo Umakanta Chaudhary and Krishna Karki secured 457 and 66 votes, respectively.

Chitralekha was from Deuba side while Sita stood for Poudel panel in the election fray. Sita Devi had already handled the responsibility of NC Siraha district President twice whereas Chitralekha took the role of Deputy Speaker, party treasurer and Education Minister.

As many as 3,148 out of total 3,161 general convention members from across the country had cast vote in the polls for 64 posts including office-bearers. The general convention has elected Sher Bahadur Deuba with overwhelming votes in the runoff election held on March 7.

Meanwhile, the vote counting of election for 25 central committee members (open) under the 13th general convention of the Nepali Congress is set to begin from 10.00 am on Wednesday. RSS
