Number of Nepali migrant workers decreasing

Labor, Foreign Employment

Kathmandu / July 23: The number of workers going for foreign employment has decreased notably in the last fiscal year in comparison to the previous one.

According to the Department of Foreign Employment, the number decreased by 94,174 in comparison to the previous fiscal year. It shared that a total of 512,887 workers had left for foreign countries for employment in the fiscal year 2071-72 BS.

The decreasing ratio is 18 per cent. According to data, 138 thousand 529 had left for Saudi Arabia, 129 thousand 038 for Qatar, 60 thousand 979 for Malaysia, 52 thousand 793 for United Arab Emirates and 7 thousand 432 for South Korea. Among them, 399 thousand 406 are male while 19 thousand 307 female.

The reason behind the decreasing number of foreign going labourers is employment opportunities becoming available inside the country due to the reconstruction projects, the border blockade, Malaysia losing attraction as foreign employment destination country and the protest by the manpower agencies after the government adopted the ‘free-visa free-ticket’ policy, said Department spokesperson Mohan Adhikari.
