International Darnal Award to Chamar

Jagaran Media CentreKathmandu / Aug 15: The ‘International Darnal Award for Social Justice’, instituted in memory of Dalit rights activist Subhash Darnal, has been awarded to Rakshyaram Chamar of Kapilvastu.

The award carries a purse of Rs 500,000. Chamar, 28, who was born in the marginalized Madhesi Dalit family, has been honoured in recognition of his contribution to propel the agenda of social justice and education of Dalit and other marginalized groups.

Late Darnal’s mother Sarita, Dalit movement leader Padam Sundas and founder member of Shakti Samuha Nepal, Charimaya Tamang, jointly presented the award to Chamar at a function held in the capital on Monday. Jagaran Media Centre (JMC) and Sarita Pariyar Trust jointly organized the programme.

Darnal had lost his life in a car accident in the United States of America on August 2011.

Darnal had served JMC as founder chairperson, Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP) as former Chairperson and Samata Foundation as Executive Director.

On the occasion, JMC Chairperson Rem Biswokarma said that Nepali society has to learn many things from Darnal who had substantially worked for the future of Dalit and backward people of Nepal. RSS
