Dr KC begins ninth hunger strike
Kathmandu / Sept 26: Prof Dr Govinda KC has begun ninth hunger strike from Monday, citing that his demands relating to the reforms on medical education and health service were not addressed.
Dr KC, who had announced to stage hunger strike from September 19, had postponed his fast-unto-death after giving one week’s ultimatum to the government. He had given a week’s time to the government reasoning that Education Minister and the Health Minister made commitment to implementing the past agreement.
Dr KC has been staging hunger strike putting forth various demands including approval of Medical Education Act from Parliament, impeachment to Chief of Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority, Lokman Singh Karki, and Commissioner Raj Narayan Singh, determination of medical education fee as per the suggestion of Mathema Commission, and appointment of Dean at Institute of Medicine as per the seniority, among others.
Health Minister Gagan Kumar Thapa, who was positive towards the demands of Dr KC since earlier, said that an environment conducive has already been created to hold discussion on bill related to medical education in the Parliament. The government has already stopped providing affiliation to new colleges on medical education until formulation of new education act keeping in mind the previous agreements and suggestion of Mathema Commission.
