Minister Karki emphasizes credible news, news of rural communities
Kathmandu / Nov 23: Minister for Information and Communications Surendra Kumar Karki has suggested the media exercising full press freedom that they checked whether their news were credible.
During an inspection visit at the National News Agency (RSS) central office on Wednesday, Minister Karki complained that some of the media were disseminating news in line with their vested interest, but the government media are comparatively authentic and credible. “Media should be responsible. The plights and paucity in the rural areas should be a priority,” he underscored.
He shared a glaring fact that the Nepal’s media have failed to pick 80 per cent of the issues that have direct bearing on the general public. The Minister wondered why sensational news from urban areas become journalists’ priority while leaving aside the rural concerns.
The Minister assured that the government was serious on career development of the RSS employees and reconstruction of the damaged offices.
On the occasion, Secretary at the Ministry, Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya, suggested the RSS to keep intact its brand of credibility. “Efforts are on in the 14th plan to develop RSS as the news/data bank,” he shared, adding that Ministry would take initiatives to make the RSS more resourceful. He directed the RSS people to suggest the change in RSS Act and Regulation in line with federal structure.
RCC Chairman Kul Chandra Wagle said the RSS employees were working in a risky structure after the earthquake. Now, construction of the new building must begin soon, he added.
General Manager Nirmala Acharya informed the Minister and his team about the RSS activities. According to her, RSS was trying to appoint reporters in the neighbouring countries.
Others including RSS Board member Gangadhar Parajuli, Chief Editor Raju Shakya, Administrative Chief Somnath Lamichhane, FNJ RSS Chapter Chair Bishnu Nepal and representatives from various trade unions put forth their views about RSS before the Minister. RSS
