14th KIMFF kicks off in Kathmandu

kimffKathmandu / Dec 8: The 14th edition of Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) has started in Kathmandu from Thursday.

Minister for Information and Communications Surendra Kumar Karki inaugurated the festival by hitting a KIMFF-labelled gong that drew both the attention and laughter from the audiences from the jam-packed theatre at the Kumari Hall.

A total of 90 movies of various genres from 28 countries will be screened during the Festival that started with the screening of international award-winning Nepali movie ‘Seto Surya’ (White Sun).

A wide-variety of 16 Nepali movies themed on post-conflict Nepal, climate change, women empowerment and post-quake scenario and the like will be shown during the five-day festival.

Similarly, the 74 international movies, including adventure cinema, documentaries, experimental films, animation movie as well as feature films , will share the screen, shared the KIMFF Chair Basanta Thapa.

Organized by Himal Association and promoted by Nepal Tourism Board, this year Alliance for Social Dialogue has also been the part of the organizer which will present a short film competition under the title “Strengthening Nepal’s Public Services’.

Originally organized bi-annually since its inception in 2000, the festival has been organized annually since 2007.

Over the years, the annual event grew into an annual city event as it continued to evolve from the festival focusing on issues impacting mountain people worldwide, stated Festival director Ramyata Limbu.

According to her, every festival has been drawing larger number of audiences, mostly those interested to explore the life and times of people and places in mountainous region through the movies.

On the occasion, Minister Karki pledged government support for the development and promotion of the Nepali film sector. RSS
