Medical students demand action against their College

Kathmandu / Mar 12: The students of Gandaki Medical College have demanded a probe and appropriate action against the Administration and Board members of the College. At a press conference organized in Kathmandu today, the victim students shared that were agitating for the past 40 days as they were duped by the Board members of the College.

A forgery case was filed at the District Police Office, Kaski against 11 persons including the Chairman of the Board, stating that the College administration had charged them Rs 800,000 to Rs 1.8 million per student, way more that the fee fixed by the government, they said. The fee in Kathmandu Valley has been capped at Rs 3.8 million for enrolment while private medical colleges outside the Valley should not charge more than Rs 4.24 million for the MMBS course, according to the government-set fee structure.

Anil Sinha, third year student of MMBS in the College, said that as many as 86 students in the College were barred from taking exams while they were denied facilities and services despite paying exorbitant fees.

According to him, the future of 90 students in the College was in limbo. There are altogether 500 students currently studying in the College. Another student Paribartan Sharma added that the College administration charged them up to 18 per cent interest in case of delay in paying their fees.

He explained, “Although the College charges a hefty amount from us under various titles, there are no any facilities and physical infrastructures in relative to the fees.” Furthermore, the agitating students shared that the College had not paid salaries to many teachers. RSS
