Committee mulls mechanism to materialize SDGs

Kathmandu / July 16: The Sustainable Development and Good Governance Committee of the National Assembly is prepared to set up a parliamentary mechanism to materialize the sustainable development goals (SDGs) within the stipulated time.

Committee Chairperson Taradevi Bhatta informed that the mechanism would have five members from each State in addition to 14 members of the Committee. The mechanism is expected to set up coordination between the State and federal level to implement the SDGs programs effectively.

In the first phase, the people’s representatives at the local levels would be made aware of the SDGs, said the Committee at a press meet today. Any member of the State with keen interest and knowledge in the sector of sustainable development would be included in the mechanism. The mechanism would work as an informal group. Committee Member Bimala Poudel informed that after making the people’s representatives aware of the SDGs programs, additional efforts would be made for encouragement to implement the programs.

The Committee informed that some States have set goals in the foundation paper prepared in course of forwarding good governance and sustainable development in a balanced way. The United Nations has announced the period from 2016 to 2030 as the time to achieve SDGs. There are 17 SDGs. Briefing about the work progress of the Committee activities, Committee member Sarita Prasain said it had made a strategic action plan of the programs to be carried out immediately including review of achievements, capacity building and investigation.
