Appointment of province governors doesn’t breach election code of conduct: EC

Kathmandu / Nov 6:Election Commission on Wednesday clarified that the recent decision of the government of relieving the former chiefs of provinces of their posts has not breached the election code of conduct.

Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu, Election Commissioner Ishwari Poudel clarified that the decision of the government has not violated the election code as it doesn’t restrict the sacking and appointment of governors, and reshuffling the cabinet.

Meanwhile, the main opposition party Nepali Congress has objected to the government’s decision to reshuffling the governors of all the seven provinces.

On the occasion, Poudel informed that concerned district election officers and chief district officers have been assigned to take necessary action against those violating election codes.

Earlier, President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Sunday removed the governors of all seven provinces following a recommendation for the same from the Cabinet.

A day after sacking the governors of all seven provinces appointed by the previous Nepali Congress government, President Bidya Bhandari had appointed new governors in all the provinces as per the recommendation of the government on Monday evening.

At a special function at Rashtrapati Bhawan, Sheetal Niwas, President Bhandari also administered oath of office and secrecy to newly-appointed governors, namely Somnath Adhikari ‘Pyasi’ (State-1), Tilak Pariyar (State-2), Bishnu Prasad Prasain (State-3), Amik Sherchan (Gandaki State), Dharmanath Yadav (State-5), Govinda Prasad Kalauni (Karnali State) and Sharmeela Kumari Pant (Sudurpaschim State).
