Karnali Province earns Rs 600 million by exporting over 50,000 goats

Karnali / Oct 2: This year, 50,000 goats and mutton meat have been exported from Karnali Province for Dashain.

According to the Directorate of Livestock Development under the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperatives of the province, the province has earned over Rs 600 million from the export of the said number of goats.

Information officer of the Directorate, Mohan Giri said, “As the local and provincial governments have tried to attract farmers by conducting various subsidy programs, the animal husbandry business has increased which led to an increase in the production.”

At present, cattle, sheep and other animals are being exported for meat from the four checkpoints of the province: Karnali Chisapani Kuine and Harya, Kalimati Kalche of Salyan and Kapurkot checkpoint of Surkhet.

Last year, around 50,000 cattle were exported for meat. Information officer Giri said that some of them were not sold and returned. According to the directorate, more than 2,000 goats and sheep were returned.

During the festive season, goats, sheep and mountain goats are exported from different districts of Karnali to different big cities of the country. Compared to previous years, it has been seen that the production of sheep and mountain goats has increased in the Himalayan districts of Jumla, Kalikot, Humla, Mugu and Dolpa of Upper Karnali.

Karnali self-sufficient in mutton

Karnali Province has become self-sufficient in goat meat. Although the province is self-sufficient in goat meat due to various production-oriented programs, chicken meat still has to be imported from outside.
