Melamchi water supply to resume to Kathmandu from mid-November
Kathmandu / Oct 14: Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee (MDWDC) is making necessary preparations to bring water from Melamchi to Kathmandu Valley from mid-November.
Before the start of the rainy season, the MDWSP had stopped the water diversion work in Melamchi tunnel since mid-week of May to protect the structures and tunnels in the headwork area of the project.
The MDWSP is making necessary preparations to bring water from Melamchi to the valley again after the possibility of heavy rain in the coming days of this year is very low.
Rajendra Prasad Pant, senior divisional engineer of the committee, said that necessary preparations are being made to bring water to the valley. “Since May, we had stopped the work of sending water to the tunnel targeting the possible flood and landslide in the Melamchi river,” he said.
Pant informed Republica that by allocating a budget of 100 million rupees, the Chinese construction company Sino Hydro Power has been deployed at the site to bring water from Melamchi back to the valley.
The landslides that occurred during the rainy season damaged about four kilometers of road track from Kihunal to Ambathan Headworks in Sindhupalchok and also damaged three temporary bridges. “Last year, the flood and landslide in the Melamchi river caused a lot of damage. But compared to the previous year, this year the damage has been very less. That’s why we hope that the water of Melamchi can be brought to the valley in a short period of time,” Pant said.
Pant said, “The track from Melamchi’s Kihunal to Ambathan headworks and three-four temporary bridges will be built as soon as possible. Due to this, the water of Melamchi will also come as fast.”
