Govt. committed to press freedom: PM Deuba

Kathmandu / Oct. 24: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that the government is committed to press freedom. During a greetings exchange program organized by Nepal Press Union here today on the occasion of Tihar, Nepal Sambat and Chhath festivals, he said that the government is committed to protecting press freedom and strengthening democracy.

Prime Minister Deuba said freedom of the press is necessary for the strengthening of democracy, which has been guaranteed by the Constitution. The government will stand for press freedom as there cannot be development and strengthening of democracy in the country without it.

“Press freedom is essential for democracy. Even the Nepali Congress has not imposed any restrictions, since the constitution itself ensures the freedom of the press, everything should be done to promote it”, said Prime Minister and President of Nepali Congress Deuba.

Stating that elections are important as people can choose their representatives, he reiterated that the leadership of the Congress was necessary for the development and prosperity of the country, and strengthening of democracy.

On the occasion, President of Press Union Shiva Lamsal expressed the belief that the Congress-led government to be formed after the upcoming elections would conclude the media bill.

Press Union Vice President Nakul Aryal emphasized that all democratic journalists should be active to strengthen democracy along with the development of professional journalism. RSS
