KMC invites laborers to form cooperatives to undertake development and construction projects

Kathmandu / Oct 14: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has issued a notice calling for the establishment of labor cooperatives to engage in a variety of activities, including developmental and construction projects.

The metropolis issued the notice on Friday in line with the existing procurement regulations, which allow labor cooperatives to execute development and construction projects up to Rs 50 million.

Bimala Koirala, deputy director of the Department of Cooperatives at the Kathmandu metropolis, said that the provisions within the Public Procurement Act and regulations authorize development work under Rs 50 million to be undertaken by labor cooperatives.

“Why not make the best use of this provision? We are inviting laborers to come forward and express their interest in forming cooperatives. If they express their desire to participate, the plan is to proceed accordingly,” said Koirala.

The notice issued by the metropolis states, “In accordance with Rule 97 (a) of the Public Procurement Regulations 2064, a notice has been issued inviting workers who wish to establish a labor cooperative organization under the Cooperatives Act of 2074 BS to get in touch with the Department of Cooperatives.”
