Govt introduces yoga program for inmates across Nepal

Kathmandu / Nov 28: The government is going to promote the concept of yoga with the aim of developing positive thinking among inmates who are accused of being involved in criminal activities.

Under the campaign of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha to promote the yoga culture as self-awakening in ministries and subordinate bodies, yoga camps are set to be conducted in prisons across the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha, Home Secretary Dinesh Bhattarai, Director General of the Prison Management Department Kashiraj Dahal, Regional Acharya of Nepal Vipassana Center Roop Jyoti, former Inspector General of Police Kuber Singh Rana at a meeting held at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday decided to conduct the camp from Nakkhu Prison.

After the ten-day camp in Nakkhu prison within a month, similar camps will be organized in other prisons. There are 74 prisons in the country including the Central Jail. There are about 25,000 prisoners in that prison.

According to Sushil Shah, a religious volunteer of Nepal Vipassana Center, the camp will be conducted under the management of the center jail itself. Earlier, the first phase of yoga camps were conducted in Nakkhu, Bhimphedi, Parasi and Biratnagar jails.
