Additional 5.8 million Nepalis procured internet services last year

Kathmandu / July 8: An additional 5.79 million Nepalis procured internet services in one year since the COVID-19 hit the country due to an increasing use of online platforms in various fronts during the period.

According to Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), the aforementioned number of internet users was added during mid-April 2020 and mid-April 2021. In the new figure, the country has a total of 27.3 million purchasers of internet service.

There are 40 companies providing internet services via cable and fiber means. Of an estimated 90.56 percent population having access to the internet, the major rise in the number was seen in fixed broadband and mobile broadband platforms.

Regarding fixed broadband users, an additional 2.19 million people purchased the service during the review period. In total, 7.37 million users are currently relying on this service for the internet.

According to the NTA, 65.47 percent of the country’s population use the internet in mobile sets. Of them, 11.9 million individuals operate 3G service while 7.69 million use 4G to run the internet.
