Nepal’s ghee exports flourish, reaching five countries

Kathmandu / Oct 26: Nepal’s ghee exports have been on the rise, showcasing the country’s potential in this sector. In the fiscal year 2020/21, the Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) initiated the export of Nepalese ghee to Japan, with a private company purchasing the ghee produced by the government institution.

The success of this first-ever export paved the way for the private sector to explore ghee exports further. Within three years of commencing ghee exports, Nepali ghee is now reaching five countries.

As reported by the Trade and Export Promotion Center, Nepal has exported ghee worth NPR 42.6 million. In the fiscal year 2020/21, Nepal began ghee exports to Japan, selling ghee worth NPR 4.74 million. In the subsequent fiscal year 2021/22, Nepal expanded its exports to Japan, Canada, India, and Hong Kong, with ghee exports worth NPR 19.3 million. The majority of this export, NPR 18.7 million, was directed to Japan, while Canada received ghee worth NPR 190,000, and India received ghee worth NPR 391,000.

During the last fiscal year, Nepal exported 16,670 kg of ghee worth NPR 18.6 million to Japan and Australia. Of this total, ghee worth NPR 16.4 million was shipped to Japan, and ghee worth NPR 2.5 million found its way to Australia from Nepal. The Dairy Development Corporation reports that Nepal is exporting 5,000 liters of ghee each month.

In the current fiscal year, up to Bhadra (mid-August to mid-September), Nepal exported 6,616 kg of ghee worth NPR 5.9 million. The primary recipient was India, where 5,000 kg of ghee worth NPR 5.58 million was delivered, while Australia received 1,616 kg of ghee worth NPR 357,000 during the same period. Nepal’s ghee industry is flourishing with these expanding exports.
