PM Prachanda to seek vote of confidence on July 12; Rai-led JSP withdraws support to govt

Kathmandu / July 5: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ is scheduled to seek a vote of confidence in the Parliament on July 12.

Writing a letter to the federal parliament on Friday, PM Prachanda mentioned that after a party of the ruling coalition withdrew the support to the government, he will take a vote of confidence on July 12 as per Article 100 (2) of the constitution of Nepal.

The CPN-UML withdrew its support to the government on Wednesday after it ditched its coalition with the CPN (Maoist Centre) and joined hands with the Nepali Congress to form a new government. As per the understanding, UML chair KP Sharma Oli will lead a ‘national consensus government’ for a year and a half. As per the understanding, Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba will be the prime minister for the remaining term of the present parliament.

It will be Dahal’s fifth floor test after being appointed prime minister on December 25, 2022, due to frequent changes in the coalition. The prime minister is likely to lose the trust vote this time, as the CPN-UML, which was the largest party in the coalition, has withdrawn its support to the government.

The prime minister went for the fourth floor test on May 20 after the Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal withdrew its support to the government following a split on May 5. Dahal received 157 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives. One member abstained, while none voted against the motion.
