Government provides Rs 200,000 each to victims of monsoon-induced disasters

Kathmandu / July 20: The government has released Rs 200,000 per family for relief distribution to the families of 69 people who lost their lives in the monsoon disaster. The funds have been released to the concerned District Disaster Management Fund.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Rs 13.8 million has been released for the families of the 69 victims who lost their lives in monsoon-induced disasters. Some districts have already completed the process and distributed relief to the victims’ families.

During the monsoon season this year, more than 125 people have lost their lives due to various monsoon-induced calamities, with most deaths caused by floods, landslides, and lightning. The NDRRMA has informed that 125 individuals who were at high risk due to heavy rainfall have been relocated to safer places by security agencies.

Spokesperson at the NDRRMA, Dr. Dijan Bhattarai, also reported that these individuals were rescued by helicopter from districts including Okhaldhunga, Taplejung, Kalikot, and Bajhang.

Issuing a status report on Friday, the NDRRMA informed that the District and Local Disaster Management Committees, Nepal Red Cross, and other organizations have distributed food and non-food items to the affected families.

According to the report, Rs 15,000 to 20,000 has been distributed as immediate relief to the families affected by the monsoon. “The Red Cross has provided 745 nets, 295 blankets, 250 mattresses, 125 utensils, 100 hammocks, 225 hygiene kits, and 1,138 meters of cloth. Additionally, the agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs has provided 520 tarpaulins, 50 tents, 300 blankets, 500 mattresses, and 50 sleeping bags,” Bhattarai said.

Heavy rains at the beginning of the monsoon have caused significant damage to human lives and property.
