Three-nation women Everest expedition flagged off

Kathmandu / Apr 15: Three women climbers from Nepal, India and China are going to scale Mt Everest this season as a team with an objective of empowering women in the region and spreading the message of universal peace and friendship.

According to the expedition organisers, the expedition has been flagged off today amidst a function in the Capital. “This type of expedition has been organised for the first time in the history of Everest Expedition.”

The three women who are going to climb Mt Everest are Kanchhi Maya Tamang from Nepal, Kalpana Dash from India and Liyamu Ma from China.

The expedition will be guided by world-renowned mountaineer Pemba Dorje Sherpa who successfully climbed Mt Everest 18 times as a leader and is a holder of six Guinness world records. He was also the Goodwill Ambassador of Nepal Tourism Year 2011. “World record holding climber Phurba Tenjing Sherpa of Dreamers Destination will be the climbing leader of the team.”

According to a statement issued by Nepal Tourism Board, Visit Nepal Year 2020 has supported this expedition to achieve their goal. The Team will be given the VNY 2020 flag with the signature of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli which they will hoist on the summit of the mountain.

It is expected that this expedition will give the message to women of the region that women are capable of carrying out adventure activities, and will inspire other women to come to Nepal for adventure activities, the statement added.

Tamang is the first woman of her community to successfully climb Mt Everest. She is also involved in social causes with various organisations and is also the Goodwill Ambassador of UN Women since 2017.

Dash is a qualified climber having climbing experience in India, Nepal, Europe, South America and Australia. She also climbed Mt Everest in 2008 as a team leader apart from climbing six other highest peaks in other continents.

Ma has previously led and climbed Everest, Manaslu, Lobuche, Mustakata. She is associated with Crazy Mountain Expedition-China.
