NHRC should be made stronger: Chairman Sharma

NHRCJanakpurdham / February 9: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairperson Anupraj Sharma spoke of the need for the government to accord additional rights to the Commission so as to make it stronger and its service efficient.

At a discussion programme organized by NHRC at Janakpurdham of Dhanusha on Tuesday, NHRC Chairman Sharma argued so in connection to the strengthening Commission with additional legal provisions, one of which was the authority to be granted to the Commission to file criminal cases.

At the programme, Sharma shared that the apex human rights body was actively working to unveil the real picture of the condition of human rights during Madhesh agitation.

“Although there were alternative ideas to contain the violent clashes ensued during the agitation in various districts across the southern plains, the incident of opening fire was a matter of investigation,” Sharma said.

The Commission was lately facing a question emanating from the situation when the Commission recommends certain course of action to the government and it does not get implemented.

Also speaking at the programme, NHRC Spokesperson Mohana Ansari said that the opening fire by the security persons pointing on chest and head of the people during the agitation was brought to the notice of government time and again.

Local politician, journalists and human rights activists raised a question over the credibility of the Commission lately, stating that the Commission lately was slow off the mark. RSS
