Dr Agrawal appointed as new IOM dean; Efforts to break Dr KC’s fast unsuccessful today

dr_govindaKathmandu / Dec 3: Tribhuvan University Executive Council today appointed Prof Dr Jagadish Agrawal as the dean of Institute of Medicine (IOM).

The Council appointed Dr Agrawal to the post to be effective from today after dean KP Singh resigned from the post on Friday.

Dr Govinda KC has been staging hunger strike for the past 21 days putting forth various demands including ending anomaly in medical education sector. With the appointment of a new IOM dean, one of the demands of Dr KC has been met.

Efforts to break Dr KC’s fast unsuccessful today

However, the meeting today between the government and Dr Govinda KC aimed at convincing the latter to end his fast-onto-death could not become successful. Dr KC is on a fast-onto-death for the past 21 days to press for reforms in medical sector. One of Dr KC’s recent demands is resignation of Tribhuvan University Vice Chancellor Dr Tirtha Khaniya.

Education Minister Dhaniram Poudel and Health Minister Gagan Thapa were present at the meeting.

There had been agreements on subjects discussed at the meeting and final touch to them would be given on Sunday, said Dr Jiban Chhetri, who was present at the meeting from Dr KC’s side.

He said 12 point-agreement draft that has been prepared by both the parties of the talks team would be signed on Sunday.

Save Dr KC: Naya Shakti Coordinator Bhattarai to Govt

Meanwhile, Naya Shakti Nepal Coordinator Dr Baburam Bhattarai on Saturday said the government should take initiatives to save the life of Dr Govinda KC, who is on a fast-unto-death to press for reforms in medical sector, by addressing his demands.

Addressing a corner meet after taking out a rally in the Capital in support of Dr KC, he also urged the government to address KC’s demands as they are ‘genuine’.

He also demanded an end to the trend of allocating political sharing in university, education and health sectors.

Organised by the Solidarity for Govinda KC Alliance, the rally started from Maitighar Mandala and converged in Baneshwor. The demonstrators shouted slogans and demanded fulfillment of Dr KC’s demands and resignation of Tribhuvan University Vice Chancellor Dr Tirtha Khaniya. RSS
