Integrated Development Plan must for solid waste management: Minister Thapa

Gagan ThapaKathmandu / Dec 17: Minister for Health, Gagan Kumar Thapa, has argued that the solid waste management in the Kathmandu Valley will be impossible until the Valley is developed as a single unit.

At the annual general meeting of the Solid Waste Management Association Nepal held here today, Minister Thapa underscored the Integrated Development Plan for managing solid waste in the Valley.

Thapa was of the opinion that the solid waste had increased due to the expansion of the road in the Valley as well as increasing number of vehicles.

Similarly, parliamentarian Rameshwor Phuyal pointed out the need of holding the local bodies’ election, saying that the election was crucial to resolve many national issues.

Another parliamentarian Bimsen Das Pradhan, pitching for the rights of the Madheshi community, asserted that the genuine demands raised by the disgruntled Madhesh-centric political parties should be addressed.

Likewise, Gangadhar Gautam, Division Chief of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Environment Department, shared that Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) was in its last phase.

ISWM is an undertaking envisioned by the Ministry of Local Development to manage the municipal solid waste of the Valley through a Public Private Partnership.

Association’s President Tikaram Dahal was of the view that action would be taken against those littering public places or throwing garbage in the public spaces a per the Solid Waste Management Act 2011 and it would help to address the issue of solid waste management to a large extent. RSS
