‘Empowered local governments for non-formal education’

local-level-restructuring-commissionKathmandu / Dec 30: Stakeholders have suggested that educational policies strengthen the role of local governments in promoting non-formal and lifelong education in the country.

Speaking at a consultation organised by National Campaign for Education in cooperation with World Education and Global Action Nepal on Friday, they said the policies should address challenges created by the new federal governing structure that has delegated rights and responsibilities about educational development to local and provincial governments.

Addressing the event, NCE General Secretary Dilli Ram Subedi said, “Local governments should be strengthened to equip them with capabilities so that they can carry out educational responsibilities assigned by the constitution.”

Non-government organisations and the civil society were ready to cooperate with the government in improving education sector in the country, added GAN Founder and Director BK Shrestha.

On the occasion, the government-formed High-Level Education Commission member Bidya Nath Koirala informed that the Commission’s recommendations to be forwarded to the government would also give due priority to the non-formal education sector.
