NMC announces relay hunger strike from Monday
Kathmandu / Jan 27: Nepal Medical Association, the professional organisation of Nepali doctors, has announced to stage relay hunger strike at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital starting Monday.
An emergency meeting of NMA Sunday decided to stage the hunger strike from 10am to 5pm inside and outside the Kathmandu Valley. The hunger strike will continue indefinitely till the next decision, claimed NMA.
The hunger strike was announced following the expiration of 72-hour ultimatum given to the government to save life of Dr Govinda KC. Dr KC has been staging fast-unto-death for the past 19 days demanding reforms in the country’s health education and medical sector.
The ruling Nepal Communist Party on Friday endorsed the National Medical Education Bill through the parliament by using its two-thirds majority and trampling on an earlier agreement reached with Dr Govinda KC.
NMA President Dr Muktiram Shrestha warned of halting all medical services of the hospitals across the country except emergency if the government failed to come up with solution to save Dr KC.
