Women Minister Regmi assures of no time limit for filing claim against sexual assault

Kathmandu / May 25: Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Uma Regmi has said a process has begun to remove a statute of limitations for filing a claim against sexual assault on girls and women.

Receiving a memorandum by a delegation of the Sambridhi Foundation Nepal here today, the Minister assured of a repeal of a time limit for the first information report (FIR) on sexual violence against women. The memo demands that there shall be no time limit for seeking justice for sexual assault against women and girls and it is a must for minimizing such offenses.

The Women Minister hoped that amendments to the law regarding rape would further strengthen the justice delivery mechanism to survivors by bringing perpetrators under the purview of the law.

The memo has sought the prompt removal of the statute of limitations for FIR in sexual violence, and justice for survivors through a fast-track and prompt amendment to the relevant law.

Foundation Chair Sangita Shrestha demanded the guarantee of the rights of minors, adolescents and women to a free and safe atmosphere.

As per the current legal provision, the time limitation for filing FIR against sexual assault is one year. RSS
