EC suggests govt to fix NA poll date

Kathmandu / Nov. 23: The Election Commission advised the government today to set the date for holding National Assembly polls for one-third of its lawmakers on January 25.

The term of one-third of the NA members is set to expire on March 3. During a meeting with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, EC office-bearers made this suggestion.

Prime Minister Dahal mentioned on the occasion that the government would announce the election date based on the EC’s recommendation, as conveyed by EC Spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudel.

According to Article 86 (3) of the Constitution, the term of one-third of the NA members is scheduled to end on March 3.

There is a legal provision that the election should be held 35 days before the expiration of their term. The posts of 20 members, including one nominated by the government, will remain vacant from March 3, 2024.As of the National Census 2078, the EC has already determined the weightage for a vote of provincial assembly members at 53 and 19 for the chief or deputy chief, mayor or deputy mayor.”
