Supreme Court orders authorities to grant affiliation to B&C Medical College
Kathmandu / March 25: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered authorities to grant affiliation to the B&C Medical College based in Birtamod, Jhapa.
Hearing the writ petition filed by owner Durga Prasai, a bench of Justices Kumar Chudal and Sharanga Subedi passed the order.
Prasai filed a writ petition at the apex court naming the Kathmandu University and the Medical Education Commission as defendants. He in the petition had argued that an affiliation was not granted even after he readied all the infrastructure needed to run a medical college.
Prasai has long been lobbying to secure affiliation for his medical college. His efforts, however, were thwarted due to opposition from Dr Govinda KC, an orthopedic surgeon who has been leading a campaign demanding radical reforms in the country’s medical education and health sector.
In March 2021, Kathmandu University had recommended the Medical Education Commission to grant affiliation to the college to run MBBS courses, despite controversies surrounding its operations. However, an affiliation was not granted by the commission.
