NC leader Alam, three others get life terms in connection with 2008 Rautahat case
Kathmandu / April 25: The Rautahat District Court on Thursday handed life terms to four individuals, including Nepali Congress leader Mohammad Aftab Alam, in connection with an explosion and the subsequent murder of an unspecified number of people in Rautahat 16 years ago.
A single bench of Judge Matrika Prasad Acharya handed the sentence to Alam, his brother Mohammad Mahtab Alam, Sheikh Seraj, and Badri Sahani.
However, another accused, Mukti Sah was acquitted by the court.
The Nepali Congress leader was arrested in October 2019 for his alleged involvement in a bomb blast and the killing of the injured by throwing them into a brick kiln at Fradahawa in Rautahat district on April 9, 2008.
The blast took place in the shed belonging to Sheikh Idris, Alam’s uncle, on the eve of the first Constituent Assembly elections.
The Rautahat District Court in November 2019 decided to remand him in judicial custody. The Janakpur High Court in February 2020 upheld the district court’s decision that Alam would remain in custody until a verdict is passed in the case.
