Government to honour women’s volleyball players with Rs300,000 each

Kathmandu / Aug. 16: The government has decided to honour the Nepali women’s volleyball players who were runners-up in the CAVA Women’s Volleyball Nations League with a cash prize of Rs300,000 each.

The Cabinet meeting held on Thursday decided to honour the 14 players who represented Nepal in the tournament held in Kathmandu, said Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung, who is also the government’s spokesperson.

According to Minister Gurung, the head coach will receive Rs200,000, while the manager, coach, and physiotherapist will each be awarded with Rs120,000.

On August 7, Nepal national women’s volleyball team’s hope to win a first major international trophy at home was dashed again as they lost to India 3-2 in the final of the CAVA Women’s Volleyball Nations League at the National Sports Council covered hall in Kathmandu.

This was the second time Nepal faced India in the title match at home and first since the 13th South Asian Games.

The hosts had defeated India 25-18, 12-25, 25-17, 18-25, 15-13 in the league stage to register their first ever victory over their South Asian rivals, and a revenge victory over a strong Iran in the semi-finals had injected them with fresh hopes that they would finally become able to end their drought.
