Sales of local honey increases after import ban


Chitwan / Nov 15: The sale of local honey has increased after the imposition of the ban on the import of honey.

According to former chairperson of the Federation of Nepal Beefarmer Shiva Sharma Poudel, 1200 metric tons of honey has remained unsold.

Meanwhile, when there was no restriction on the import of honey, 3145 metric tons of honey used to remain in storage.

Paudel viewed that it is necessary to impose a 60 per cent tax if import restriction has been lifted.

He informed that Nepal has 1 lakh 60 thousand mellifera beehive and 1 lakh 70 thousand Serena beehive.

He said it can produce 4900 metric tons of honey per year.

The chairperson of the Federation of Nepal Beefarmer Subhashchandra Ghimire said that international companies have also been demanding of Nepalese honey.

Ghimire said that they have urged the government not to lift import restrictions.

He said that Nepal consumes 9200 metric tons of honey each year.

Nepalese honey cannot compete with the cheap honey of India.
