FNCCI to elect its president through direct election
Kathmandu / Dec 10: The Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) will be getting its president through direct election with the FNCCI’s special general assembly held on Tuesday endorsing the provision into effect.
With the new provision, one of the biggest umbrella organizations of the private sector has wiped out the condition of electing the senior vice-president automatically into its president. The FNCCI has been practicing this system since the past eight years.
In July, the working committee of the federation unanimously amended the statute to elect its president through direct elections. According to the FNCCI, the transition will take effect after the current Senior Vice President Anjan Shrestha assumes the presidency and completes his tenure.
In 2016, the FNCCI amended its statute and enabled automatic elevation of the senior vice-president to the post of president without taking part in the election. However, polls were to be conducted to elect the senior vice-president. Bhawani Rana became the first president of the FNCCI under the clause.
Citing extreme manipulation by role players and extravagant expenses in its presidential election, the FNCCI eight years ago had entered into the new provision of electing its head. Now, it has been scrapped as similar malpractices are seen even in the election of vice-president, said a source at FNCCI.
The Tuesday special general assembly also endorsed the two-year term of the newly elected working committee of the FNCCI. It rejected the proposal to elect two senior vice presidents in the new working committee.
