Congress General Secretary Thapa criticises government’s attempts to sack NEA chief Ghising

Kathmandu / March 08: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has expressed dissatisfaction publicly against the government’s attempt to remove the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Kulman Ghising from the position.

Thapa’s comments came after a Cabinet meeting earlier this week decided to move forward with the process of questioning Ghising. The Minister’s repeated efforts to remove Ghising have been met with public criticism from within the ruling party.

During a programme in Sindhuli, Thapa urged the government to refrain from engaging in unnecessary activities such as seeking clarifications from a government employee repeatedly.

“The Energy Ministry has the electricity authority under it. We have been hearing about the issue of the managing director for so long. I cannot understand whether this is ill-intentioned or simply a lack of skill in dispute resolution. Ghisings is about to retire in a few months. Then, he can be replaced by a better person,” Thapa said.

He was of the view that the government seemed to be fixated on one individual. “This constant hassle is neither appropriate nor productive. Ministers should not get involved in such unnecessary tasks,” former health minister Thapa explained.

Thapa further stated that it is the prime minister’s responsibility to prevent ministers from engaging in counterproductive actions. “If ministers get involved in unnecessary tasks, the prime minister must step in and stop it. The prime minister is the head of the Cabinet and should take responsibility for both good and bad actions,” he said.

Thapa highlighted the need for the government to focus on positive contributions instead of negative distractions. “When one does 50 good things, one mistake overshadows all the good work, and this is a sad reality,” he added.

The issue gained significant attention after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday evening, where it was decided that the Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Ministry would ask for a three-day explanation on why Ghising should not be removed from his position. The proposal was prompted by Energy Minister Khadka, who earlier sought clarification from Ghising twice.
