TU scraps affiliation to National Medical College

Kathmandu / Sept. 6: Amid criticism from various quarters, the Tribhuvan University on Wednesday scrapped the affiliation to National Medical College.

Soon after the probe committee submitted a report, the executive committee of the TU scrapped the temporary affiliation of National Medical College.

Earlier on September 3, the TU had decided to put the decision of granting affiliation to Kathmandu National Medical College “on hold” and said that decision to grant affiliation to National Medical College “will not be implemented for now”.

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, in his capacity as the TU chancellor, had also summoned Vice-chancellor Tirtha Raj Khaniya, and instructed him to scrap the decision to grant affiliation the medical college.

On Saturday, Dr Govinda KC had warned of staging another hunger strike if the government did not take any tangible measures to scrap the affiliation granted to the Medical College.

Earlier on August 31, declaring the affiliation granted to the Kathmandu National Medical College as illegal, the Nepal Medical Association (NMA) had demanded an immediate annulment of the decision.

The TU granted affiliation to the medical college on August 27, on the fourth day of Dr Govinda KC’s 11th fast-unto-death demanding that no new medical colleges should be allowed in Kathmandu Valley for the next 10 years.
