Dr KC to stage 12th hunger strike from October 6

dr_govindaKathmandu / Sept. 19: Dr Govinda KC has warned of staging another round of hunger strike starting October 6. This will be the 12th hunger strike of the agitating doctor who has long been demanding end of anomalies in the country’s health education and medical sector.

This time Dr KC has put forth four demands:

Immediate endorsement of Health Profession Education Bill by incorporating suggestions of Mathema Commission Report.

Compliance with the government proposed fee structure by medical colleges, removal of Kathmandu University Dean Rajendra Kozu, revocation of KU decision to charge medical education fee higher than the government-set amount, taking action against TU office bearers who granted affiliation to hospital run on an empty building and return the rights of IoM snatched by the TU.

Proper investigation into embezzlement of billions of rupees by suspended chief of Nepal Oil Corporation Gopal Bahadur Khadka and necessary legal action against him, immediate suspension of other public post bearers who aided Khadka in land purchase scandal and take action against them

Allocation of budget for initiating official classes in Karnali Health Science Foundation, expedition of works at government medical colleges in Dang and Kailali and initiation of the process to open government medical colleges in other parts of the country

In a statement released on Tuesday, Dr Govinda KC, a senior orthopedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, has said that medical mafias are still running rampant in medical sector despite his numerous past attempts to subdue them and create a better health education system in the country.

Dr KC has said that officials of Kathmandu University, who are dancing to the tunes of medical mafias, are embezzling millions of rupees by charging fees exceeding the government-set fee structure.

The statement has accused the three major parties of forming a syndicate among themselves to endorse the health education bill in such a way that aims at benefitting medical mafias rather than public or students.

Dr KC, who sounded agitated in his statement, went on to accuse the big parties of obstructing the establishment of government medical colleges in many parts of the country in order to fulfill their vested interests under the influence of medical mafias.

“We will never allow politicians to take the medical education as an opportunity for them to turn their black money into white by investing in this sector,” said the statement.

He has warned that this will be his decisive agitation as term of the current Parliament is ending soon and if so happens, all the achievements obtained so far are likely to go to waste in case the medical act is not formed immediately.

Dr KC has come down heavily upon all the political malpractices and corruption in the country, which according to him has taken a new height in recent times. He has denounced the roles of Judiciary, constitutional anti-graft body CIAA, Parliament and political parties for they have been ineffective in controlling corruption or delivering justice to the public. ekantipur
