Dr KC ends fast-unto-death, slams govt for ‘policy-level corruption’

Kathmandu / Feb 01: A day after the upper house endorsed the controversial National Medical educational Bill without favoring amendments, the agitating surgeon Dr Govinda KC has decided to end his 16th fast-unto-death.

Organising a press meet at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Dr KC informed of his decision to end the hunger strike that lasted 24 days.

Earlier, Ministry of Health and Population warned to jail doctors who shut down all health services supporting the agitating surgeon. While announcing his decision, Dr KC said that him continuing the strike would disrupt health service delivery and affect general people.

However, Dr KC said that he would continue his struggle against the policy-level corruption that has gripped the medical education sector. Likewise, the surgeon also slammed the government for being insensitive on reforming medical education sector and legalising malpractices for commercial gains.

“I will fight until I initiate reform in the medical education sector,” Dr KC said prior to being transferred to TUTH Intensive Care Unit for further treatment.

Earlier, Former President Ram Baran Yadav, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, Former Speaker Daman Nath Dhungana and Former TU Vice-Chancellor Kedar Bhakta Mathema had reached TUTH to urge Dr KC to end his hunger strike.
