Govt ready to amend election laws: Minister Sharma

Kathmandu / Aug. 9 : Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Govinda Prasad Sharma Koirala has said that the government is ready to amend the election laws.

Speaking at the meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Tuesday, Minister Sharma said that the government is ready to amend the laws related to elections. He said that the Election Commission is doing its homework in that regard. He mentioned that the government has been amending the laws that are against gender equality and inclusiveness since the past and clarified that the policy of the government is to amend the laws in favor of gender equality and inclusiveness with regard to the purpose of election.

Minister Sharma said that since Nepal’s law has adopted the matter of inclusion and equality, they should play their roles in implementing the legal system. He said that there is a need to reform the party structure to ensure equal representation of women. He clarified that the government’s goal is to increase the representation of women to 40 percent in the federal parliament, 40 percent in the provincial assemblies and 42 percent in the local governments by 2030.
