KMC launches initiative to provide quality food at fair prices to Kathmandu residents

Kathmandu / Dec 9: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has launched a new initiative for the supply of quality, clean, and fresh food.

The KMC, in collaboration with other municipalities and partners, has initiated efforts to provide quality and fresh food, as well as agricultural products, to the residents at fair prices.

The KMC has developed an agro-pooling procedure for this purpose. The executive meeting, chaired by Mayor Balendra Shah, unanimously approved the procedure.

According to the procedure, the KMC will identify local levels for agricultural production areas and encourage the production of organic food items, which will be sold and distributed within the city through agricultural cooperatives or companies.

The procedure mentions that two vendors will be contracted for the production of agricultural products in the production areas and their distribution within the city. The entity responsible for production will also be required to handle transportation to the city. KMC officials stated that the costs for production, processing, and transportation must align with the rates approved by the respective municipalities.

The production areas categorize the items into eight groups. The first group includes rice, wheat, maize, millet, and sorghum; the second group contains beans, lentils, chickpeas, and pigeon peas; and the third group consists of beans, soybeans, peas, and broad beans.

Similarly, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and yams are placed in the fourth group; garlic, onions, ginger, turmeric, chili, and Sichuan Pepper in the fifth group; oil, ghee, and dairy products in the sixth group; fish, eggs, chicken, goat meat, and mutton in the seventh group; and seasonal green vegetables and fruits in the eighth group.
